BARF Meeting Minutes
January 8th, 2009 http://www.barfclub.org/
Hello fellow Beer and Ale Research Foundation members. The meeting this month was held at the Five Points Community Farmers Market. Their Deli stayed open extra late to accommodate those of us who had not eaten dinner yet (thanks!), and the space itself was very open, spacious, and there was plenty of seating for all. Hope we have another chance to visit soon.
Discussion Topics Several reminders this month.
- Tech Talks and Style Discussions: If you are interested in giving a Tech or Style talk, either about brewing history, or your own personal discovery, do-it-yourself project, or technique, contact us at Officers@barfclub.org so we can schedule you!
- Base Malts: Rob Kirkpatrick, President, gave a quick rundown on some of the all-grain base malts, and some of the new Malt Extract coming to Homebrew USA soon (including Munich and Golden, for those extra malty and extra light brews, respectively).
- History of IPAs: Treasurer Dan Tully gave a thorough talk about the long history of IPAs and the economic reasons for their creation and popularity. Brewed extra hoppy and potent to survive the long trip to Imperial India, a chance shipwreck introduced this British Export to the locals, forever cementing it a favorite among beer lovers.
- The first competition: Get those Porters done, they are due to Homebrew USA February 5th, by 6pm. Remember, BJCP Guidelines, 12a Brown Porters and 12b Robust Porters. (Pages 28-29, BJCP Guidelines)
- The second competition: IPAs will be up in April. Get started now to let all those hops mellow and combine! We are taking entries on April 2nd in BJCP Guidelines 14a English IPA and 14b American IPAs. (Pages 33 and 34, BJCP Guidelines)
- Membership for 2009 is due. $20 for the year will get you into some excellent company. You can pay in cash to Dan Tully at the next meeting, or via PayPal at http://www.barfclub.org. Membership Cards will be waiting at Homebrew USA on your next trip in, ready to get you your 10% club discount.
- The Pub Crawl: It is on
for Saturday January 24th, 2009. There are only a few seats left on the bus, register soon to guarantee your spot. Everyone is welcome, members and
non-members alike. $25 gets you a ride up and back to the Hill in
Richmond, filled to the top with great pubs, taverns and bars, along
with the Official 2008(?!) Pub Crawl T-shirt. The T-shirt can also be
purchased after the trip for $10. Sign up at the website, http://www.barfclub.org/. (the PayPal link is on the left sidebar.)
- The official website: We have forums now, and archives of the meeting minutes. Check out http://www.barfclub.org/forum/ for a place to discuss brewing, commercial beer, your latest equipment find, or just to vent. No worries for the sign-up, we won't be sharing your e-mail with anyone else.
- The Bourbon Barrel Brew: We have all the Imperial IPA we need now. Thanks everyone who participated. We will be filling her up this coming 3-day weekend. Contact JP at vicepresident@barfclub.org to volunteer your assistance for the filling.
Thanks Everyone, hope to see you next time!
